Some dogs come into your life and become part of your family. Some become so much more, they become your reason to keep going.

Tyson was only six weeks old when he came into my life. Shortly before I brought him home, I had been in a car accident that changed my life forever. I was facing some of the hardest, most life-altering challenges I had ever known. Tyson himself was premature and had been given very low odds of survival. In a strange way, we were both little fighters, facing battles we never asked for.

While I was dealing with physical challenges, I was also fighting battles inside my own mind. PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety became things I had to learn to live with. There were days when simply getting through the day felt like a victory.

Then there was Tyson.

From the very first day I brought him home, this tiny Boston Terrier began changing my life. Somehow, he always knew. He knew when I was upset. He knew when I was hurting. He knew when I needed someone, even on the days when I didn't think I needed anyone at all.

He became my best friend.

His cuddles could quiet the chaos in my head. His little smile could make the darkest day feel brighter. Somehow, when he was beside me, everything else seemed to fade away. For those moments, I felt like I could conquer the world.

For nearly 13 years, Tyson has been my constant. Through the good days and the unbearable ones, he has never judged me, never walked away, and never asked me to be anything other than myself. He has loved me exactly as I am.

Now, I've been given the most heartbreaking news of all.

Tyson is in end-stage congestive heart failure. At almost 13 years old, the little boy who was never supposed to make it this far is once again fighting to stay with me.

And I'm struggling.

I'm struggling with the realization that our days together are numbered. I'm struggling to imagine my life without the little face that has been there through so many chapters of it. I'm struggling because I don't know how to say goodbye to the one who taught me how to keep going.

But even now, while his own heart is failing, Tyson is still giving me peace.

He still cuddles me. He still looks at me with those eyes that somehow say everything without saying a word. He is still reminding me that love doesn't disappear just because time is running out.

Maybe that's Tyson's greatest gift to me.

He came into this world as a tiny fighter with the odds against him, and for almost 13 years, he has fought right beside me.

I don't know how many days we have left. I don't know how many more cuddles, smiles, or quiet moments I'll get to hold onto.

So for now, I'm going to cherish every single one.

Every breath.
Every cuddle.
Every smile.
Every little kiss.
Every moment he chooses to lay beside me.

Because Tyson isn't just my dog.

He's my best friend.
He's my comfort.
He's my safe place.
He's a piece of my heart.

And no matter how many days we have left, he will always be the little boy who changed my life.

My Tyson. My once-in-a-lifetime dog. My forever best friend.

Tyson is My Rescue Who Rescued Me and is featured as a Dog.
